While in BK I highly recommend wandering off of the beaten track. Get away from the tourist areas and experience the true culture of Thailand. It is exhilarating. The first advantage is the prices drop off dramatically. The main difference you will notice is the attitude of the people there. Unlike the tourist areas, where women will intentionally divert their eyes when they see you for fear of being thought of as a prostitute, you will be greeted by smiles and big, beautiful, brown eyes following you everywhere you go.

If you can speak even the slighest bit of Thai, they are simply delighted. I could only say "hello" and "thank you" in Thai when I went there, but they acted as if I has just quoted Shakespeare. It seemed as though many of them had never seen a farang before, and they seemed to love Americans.

It wasn't until my 5th day in Bangkok that I ventured into the tourist areas. I was dismally disapointed. Women looked away as I passed and the only people who would look at me were those who were selling someting. Get out. Enjoy the culture, but remember that respectable Thai women don't appreciate being hit upon blatantly.

SAPHAN KWAI

Pradiphat Rd. crosses Phahon Yothin Rd. and changes names to Sutisan-Winitchai. The Rainbow Club is here. From the Sapahn Kwai skytrain station, walk back towards Victory Monument. You should be on the even-numbered soi side of Phahon Yothin. Turn left at Sutisan and the Rainbow will be on the left.

There are two sois paralell to Sutisan and south of it with karaoke bars, massage, etc.

On the opposite side of Phahon Yothin, there are KTV and massage, etc., including some gay.

It is a Thai area.

There are also snooker clubs, one may see some foreigners here.

Continue on Sutisan-Win. and you'll reach Intramura, another collection of seedy massage parlors.

Continue further and you'll reach Ratchada-Pisek. There are upscale massage parlors and KTV here.

Other clubs, such as Poseidon and New Cleopatra and Ceasar, are very upscale, with 3,000 to 4,000 baht massage parlors and the most beautiful masseuses.

Ratchada changes names to Asoke and passes Soi Cowboy on its way to Sukhumivit. It changes names back to Ratchada and crosses Rama IV, from where you turn right and reach Silom Rd. and Pat Pong.
